Benefits of Lifelong Learning

Benefits of Lifelong Learning

There is no age cap to try something new. Experts and society agree there are many benefits to lifelong learners. There are many definitions for lifelong learning, but many consider it self-initiated education for personal development.

Lifelong learning includes developing a new skill, using new technology, and obtaining new knowledge through a structured program.

Often, individuals hone in on untapped passions or hobbies that have been put aside. On the other hand, some find an itch to try something completely unexplored. The rewards of lifelong learning are boundless. Some key benefits include the following:

  • Brain. When we acquire new knowledge or skills, the neurons in our brains form new pathways and connections. Stepping out of one’s regular routine can provide an opportunity to activate new areas of the brain.

  • Social/connected. Taking a fun course or getting involved with something new can be a great way to meet new people and feel involved. The ability to participate with others with similar motives creates a sense of community. Even if the connections are virtual, discussion groups often foster stimulating conversations.

  • Fulfillment. Humans are curious in nature. The ability to learn and acquire new knowledge has practical and psychological benefits. Many feel pride and accomplishment when they dive into their interests. No matter how big or small the activity, learning something new is something to be proud of!
